Folding anchors are the best option for kayakers. These compact anchors are relatively lightweight, but provide firm anchoring performance for most kayaking applications. However, you may wish to go for a heavier option if you are looking to kayak in stronger currents. Once you have picked a suitable anchor, you will need to attach an anchor line. Anchor lines usually come in the form of a reasonably thick rope made from nylon. This material is particularly good for use in the water, combining durability with essential density that allows it to sink. Make sure your rope is sufficiently long enough to anchor yourself in the depth of water you are kayaking in. You should also firmly attach the anchor line with a reliable knot. An anchor hitch is a good knot to use as this can be easily secured and removed when you are finished with your anchor. Next you will need to add a float to your anchor line. This float should be added at the opposite end of the line to your anchor. Foam floats in a vibrant colour are always the best option as they can be easily retrieved if they ever come free of the line.

When it comes to actually anchoring your kayak, all you need to do is drop the anchor into the water below you. If you are using a folding anchor, make sure you unfold it prior to dropping it into the water. You should make sure you are holding the anchor line itself, allowing the anchor to sink slowly into the water. Once the anchor has reached the bottom of the body of water, the anchor will stop reeling. Finally, you need to tie off the anchor line. You can secure the anchor line to either the stern or bow. Most kayaks will include a cleat that can be used to secure your anchor line. If your yak does not include one, cleat hitches are relatively affordable and easy to install.
