How to Store a Kayak

If you want your kayak to remain in pristine condition, you should seriously think about storage. If you are new to kayaking, you may be unfamiliar with how to properly store a kayak. Although there are multiple ways you can store a kayak, you need to consider a few key factors to ensure you are not exposing your yak to any stress and potential damage. Regardless of the specific method of storage you opt for, you should ensure that your kayak is kept in an erect position (standing up) or at an angle. A stored kayak should also always be properly balanced to prevent it from toppling over and suffering damage. If you are looking to store your kayak for a good amount of time, you should also think about covering it to protect from dust and moisture.

How to Store a Kayak

Picking a suitable storage place for your kayak is a must. You need to ensure you have a space that is large enough to comfortably house your kayak, allowing you to store and retrieve it easily. When stored, your kayak should not be in contact with walls or other obstacles. You should always aim to store your kayak indoors as this will protect against moisture and temperature extremes. Garages and outdoor storage sheds are always a good option for housing kayaks. However, basements and spare rooms are also good options.

When storing your kayak indoors, you should always make sure you are controlling the ambient temperature. You do not want to store your kayak in an environment that is prone to extreme highs and lows. If you have a hardshell kayak, maintaining a standard temperature will prevent the material of your yak from warping and becoming brittle over time. You should never leave your kayak exposed to sunlight. Even if your kayak is stored in an indoor space, avoid exposing it to large windows where UV rays can penetrate. You should also avoid placing your kayak next to any heat sources.

You should also observe a strict maintenance regime when it comes to storing your kayak. After a day on the water, think about cleaning your kayak with a mild detergent and dry it thoroughly. You may also want to take out any removable inserts or seats and store them separately to prevent mould from building up. Once your kayak is dried thoroughly, it is best to sheath it within a tarpaulin cover.
