Items Required to Ensure Safety on Your Ocean Kayak

If you have thought about purchasing an ocean kayak for you to get out on the big blue sea, then you are going to want to consider a necessary safety items that could easily determine whether or not you make it back from your trip. Having a mechanical compass, electronic GPS, satellite radio, as well the proper flagging and flotation devices means that if you should find yourself in trouble, that you can rest assured knowing that you stand the best chances at surviving.

Getting out on the ocean involves a lot more than just throwing on a life vest, grabbing your boat and paddle and going, because once you get away from land you can easily get turned around and lose your bearings… then it’s possible to paddle with the currents for miles before you realize you are going in the wrong direction. Can you see why having the right safety equipment matters so much?

A mechanical compass is one of those half globe compasses that float in the fluid and are practically unbreakable. The reason you need a mechanical compass is because even though manufacturers state that their electronic tracking devices are waterproof, you will often find that they never tested it in saltwater, which is incredibly corrosive. You will quickly find that most “waterproof” electronics just don’t have what it takes to stand up to the conditions you’ll be in. Ensuring that you carry along an electronic GPS or tracking device will help you if it does stand the test of time, as well as having a marine satellite radio for contacting boats or planes within your presence.

When I talk about proper flagging devices, what I am really talking about is a flare gun, a loud whistle, and a 360 degree super white lamp that is based off of either larger batteries that will last for a few days or longer, or solar powered. If you spot a light from a passing plane, helicopter, or boat, you can use the flare gun to get their attention and then proceed to use the super white lamp to guide them to your exact position.

If you are stranded during the day, often times you will be able to get the attention of passing boaters simply by blowing your whistle. When you go to purchase a flotation device, it is a good idea to purchase one in a brighter orange or red color that will be visible against the blue backdrop from above. Make sure that it is certified and will keep you face up in the water should you become unconscious.
